Lime Scale is caused by hard water which contains calcium and magnesium crystals. When lime scale forms inside your household appliances (e.g. your water tank, boiler and washing machine) it can cause damage to them. It can also look rather unpleasant when it forms around shower heads and taps. Properties in hard water areas could benefit from the installation of either a lime scale reducer or water softener onto the cold mains pipe which runs into the effected property.
This is a “budget” entry level option for householders effected by lime scale as it helps lessen the amount which forms within your home’s appliances and inside its pipes. As the hard water runs through the reducer it will pass through a magnetic field which changes the chemical properties of the minerals. Due to their altered magnetic charge they will be less likely to attach themselves to a surface. For a more effective solution we do however strongly recommend the installation of a water softener within your home.
A water softener is a special type of “filter” which removes the calcium and magnesium in hard water by using plastic beads – it cleans itself periodically by a process called “regeneration”. This option is one of the most effective ways to tackle hard water problems – it is a more expensive option but by far the best of the two.
Benefits of Water Softeners are:
- Preventing scale in the hot water system, boiler and around taps
- Removing existing scale
- Reducing boiler fuel cost and heating system maintenance costs
- Preventing soap scum which can be evident around the bath and sink
- Improving the texture of laundry by preventing detergent scum deposits within the fibres of clothes, bedding and other materials.
- Reducing soap and detergent costs.
